RETS 20 Retail Sector Skills

RETS 20 Retail Sector Skills explores more specific retail sector skills. Students will gain confidence and an understanding of a certain retail sector through a long-term practicum based in the community. Students will learn about important aspects of the workplace, such as understanding employer’s expectations, industry standards, evaluation in the workplace, workplace rules, policies and safety considerations.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. Use resources and supports in the workplace (e.g. tasklists, workplace mentors.)
  2. Demonstrate an awareness and understanding of employer’s expectations in the workplace
  3. Exhibit work habits to industry standards
  4. Articulate methods of evaluation in the workplace
  5. Use confidence and self-esteem building skills to improve employability
  6. Follow workplace rules, policies, and assigned work schedule and tasks
  7. Participate in a workplace interview
  8. Identify safety hazards in the workplace
  9. Use health and safety practices in the workplace
  10. Use sector specific vocabulary

Grading Table

Competency-based Grades

This grading system is based on satisfactory acquisition of defined skills or successful completion of the course learning outcomes. It is used where standard numerical grades are not generally applied, for example in evaluating practicum performance or work placements, in pass/fail courses or for non-credit courses.

Grade Description
AAV ABOVE AVERAGE -The student has mastered all or most course objectives/requirements in a minimum time frame and has exemplified good work and study habits.
COM COMPLETE – denotes that the student has mastered a satisfactory number of course objectives/requirements in a non-credit course
CRG CREDIT GRANTED - denotes that the student performance was satisfactory in a credit course.
NCG NO CREDIT GRANTED - denotes that the student performance was unsatisfactory.
PCG PARTIAL CREDIT GRANTED – denotes that the student has successfully completed a portion of the course objectives in a credit course.
