PHYS 105 Fundamental Physics II

PHYS 105 Fundamental Physics II is a calculus-based survey of the basics of electromagnetism. This course is suitable for those interested in further study in the physical sciences and in engineering. Electricity and magnetism form the basis for all modern electrical devices we utilize today and design for the future. We first study electrostatics of particles and simple objects. Then we investigate circuits involving electrical devices such as resistors, capacitors, and inductors. We next study how electricity and magnetism interact with each other both in circuits and in waves. Finally we look at modern subjects in physics such as semiconductors or nuclear physics. These topics form a basis for future physical science and engineering courses.

Prerequisites: PHYS 104 and MATH 100 both with a minimum grade of 60%

Corequisite: MATH 101

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. Recognize the role of electricity and magnetism in nature and in technology
  2. Provide examples of real-world applications of the topics in this course
  3. Apply a variety of problem-solving strategies in familiar and unfamiliar situations
  4. Apply calculus in the study of physics
  5. Design and build a simple electric motor
  6. Recognize the simplifications and assumptions required for a particular model to apply to the real world
  7. Use current physics lab technology and equipment to safely compose and investigate electric circuits
  8. Communicate a written solution to a physics problem in a detailed and logical approach that peers in the physical sciences can readily follow
  9. Exhibit professional behaviours such as respect for colleagues and peers, punctuality, willingness to think independently, and pride in presentation of work

Teaching and Learning Approach

In class, concepts and formulae will be presented in a variety of methods, including typical black-board notes, PowerPoint slides, videos, and demonstrations. Students’ questions are encouraged and group discussions happen on occasion. Problem solving is a major component of this course, so expect often to engage in attempting a problem prior to the solution being presented on the board. The lab provides opportunities to develop hands-on skills, to collaborate with peers, to learn methods of scientific investigations, and to confirm theoretical results.
