LMAT 15 Living Math I helps students develop skills in numeracy. Topics will include budgets, wages, coin and paper money, calculator skills, organizational tools, shopping skills, and basic number operations.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. Gain knowledge about wages, personal finances and budgeting
  2. Read and decode a pay cheque/pay stub
  3. Use calendars, planners and timetables
  4. Recognize, read, write and order numbers
  5. Practice and solve real-life problems using basic number operations
  6. Recognize and count coins and paper money
  7. Use basic number operations in daily tasks
  8. Identify and use currency in monetary transactions
  9. Identify taxes, PST and GST
  10. Recognize typical gratuities expected for certain services
  11. Use a calculator for basic calculations (adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing)
  12. Prepare a budget
  13. Read and decode bills, invoices and receipts
  14. Practice budgeting techniques using flyers and other pricing devices

Teaching and Learning Approach

Students can expect various teaching methodologies such as individual and small group projects, applying knowledge to current resources (weekly flyers, websites etc.) and playing games.

Recommended: 3-ring binder, dividers, pen and pencils, and any personal stationery items for personal use (e.g. calculator).

Competency-based Grades

This grading system is based on satisfactory acquisition of defined skills or successful completion of the course learning outcomes. Grade Description
AAV ABOVE AVERAGE -The student has mastered all or most course objectives/requirements in a minimum time frame and has exemplified good work and study habits.
COM COMPLETE – denotes that the student has mastered a satisfactory number of course objectives/requirements in a non-credit course
CRG CREDIT GRANTED - denotes that the student performance was satisfactory in a credit course.
NCG NO CREDIT GRANTED - denotes that the student performance was unsatisfactory.
PCG PARTIAL CREDIT GRANTED – denotes that the student has successfully completed a portion of the course objectives in a credit course.
