GIS 427 Project Management

School of Environment and Geomatics

GIS 427 Project Management will focus on skills pertaining to issues surrounding the management of GIS projects from start to finish. Emphasis areas will include description of the project work environment, organizational skills and tools, deliverable oriented performance appraisals, leadership and team orientation. In addition to these emphasis areas, supporting information covering costing, budgeting, meeting preparation, time management and communication skills will be addressed.

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  2. Identify techniques to avoid scope creep
  3. Describe the stages of team development
  4. Establish procedures for change management control
  5. Determine if a project is successful
  6. Develop a project
  7. Describe in depth the processes in the project management lifecycle
  8. Describe the relationship between organizational behaviour and successful project management
  9. Develop a project schedule using project management software
  10. Identify the role assumptions and constraints play in project management and planning
  11. Outline the importance of the Work Breakdown Structure
  12. Demonstrate the resource allocation and work estimation methods of assigning the right resource(s)
  13. Identify and assess project risks

Teaching and Learning Approach

A combination of readings and in-class exercises will develop each student’s ability to initiate, plan, execute, and close any project. Practical, hands-on project management tools, methods, and best practices will be learned and applied in this course.
