GERO 200 Contemporary Issues in Gerontology

GERO 200 Contemporary Issues in Gerontology will provide students with an understanding of how the process of aging affects individuals and how an aging population affects and influences Canadian society. Aging will be examined within historical, contemporary and culture contexts. Topics will include aging and health, aging demographics, the psychology and sociology of aging, finances and economics, retirement, leisure, housing and transportation, and family social supports. Participants will have the opportunity to identify and examine their personal beliefs and values about the aging process throughout the course.

Prerequisites: Admission to the Advanced Diploma in Gerontology Program

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. Describe the societal attitudes, structures and variables that influence the process and quality of aging for individuals in Canada
  2. Explain how the aging of the Canadian population impacts or challenges our society
  3. Summarize the main theories of aging
  4. Examine the influence of income, health, housing, government policy, social supports and personal perspective on aging
  5. Discuss normal changes in psychological function, intelligence and personality
  6. Review the efficacy of 3 healthcare models to support aging
  7. Propose positive and creative ways to improve well-being and quality of life in aging
