FREN 103 Beginner's French II

FREN 103 Beginner's French II is designed to develop the communication skills learned by students in French 102. Students will further their knowledge of the French language and awareness of French-speaking cultures. The focus of this course is to help students become functionally proficient in the French language through the development of the basic communication skills of speaking, listening, reading, and writing, as well as the study of vocabulary, grammar, and culture.

Prerequisites: FREN 102 with a minimum grade of 60%

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. Aurally understand some common and basic phrases, expressions, and descriptions in French
  2. Orally express themselves in the present tense in French, as demonstrated though proficiency in their ability to extend greetings, describe things, ask simple questions, and give replies
  3. Read and comprehend basic information and simplified texts
  4. Write simple sentences in the present tense in French
  5. Understand very common and basic grammatical structures including a variety of verb tenses
  6. Express familiarity with French-speaking cultures

· Introduce French sounds, and syllabification · recognize personal pronouns, regular and irregular verbs · specify the gender of nouns and adjectives · read and discuss short stories · interact in a simple conversation · memorize words and short sentences · identify idiomatic and cultural expressions

1. Passé composé (auxiliary and past participle), Être Verb 2. Reflexive verbs, Il y a, Imperative mood (tu, nous, vous) 3. Direct/Indirect Object Pronouns (la, le/lui, les/leur) 4. Demonstrative Pronoms/Adjectives, Dire, Écrire, Lire/passé composé 5. Imperfect tense, Voir, Croire, Boire/past tense 6. Present participle, Gerund, Prepositions, "Y" and "EN" 7. Relative pronouns, Future tense, Devoir/past tense, Video Conferencing 8. Conditional mood, Depuis, Tout forms 9. Subjunctive/Expressions, Avant que, Après que 10. Comparative of superiority, "Être en train de" form, Suivre, Conduire, Produire, Construire Verbs 11. Review I (first half of the content covered) 12. Corrections I (first half of the content covered) 13. Review II (second half of the content covered) 14. Corrections II (second half of the content covered) 15. The final exam will cover the following key concepts: present perfect (past actions, stucture, rule, use), être, avoir verbs, reflexive verbs, direct/indirect object pronouns (la/le/lui, les/leur), Y and EN adverbial pronouns, relative pronous, demonstrative pronouns/adjectives (celui/celle, ce/cette, etc.), TOUT, DEPUIS, AVANT QUE and APRÈS QUE forms, Imperfect and future tenses (past and future actions, stucture, rule, use), present participle, gerund, prepositions, conditional/subjunctive moods, comparatives/superlatives forms, etc..
