ENGL 50 English - Advanced Level

School of Academic Upgrading and Development

ENGL 50 English - Advanced Level is for students to upgrade their English skills. Through reading and writing, students will focus on critical and creative thinking, demonstrate oral and written communication, and develop reading, research, and cooperative learning. This course is designed to help students become natural, confident communicators. Students will engage in discussions and activities which will cover a diversity of topics, including: pre-writing strategies, essay development, summarizing, critical reading, plagiarism, grammar, and dictionary use.

 

Upon completion of ENGL 50 students are ready to enter ENGL 60: English – Provincial Level.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. Interpret, compare, and summarize information using critical and creative thinking skills
  2. Respond appropriately to thoughts, opinions and work of others
  3. Deliver an effective informative or persuasive oral presentation
  4. Evaluate arguments for validity and completeness
  5. Use a variety of reading techniques to understand, critically evaluate, and draw conclusions of written material
  6. Write essays in a variety of rhetorical modes using the writing process
  7. Source, research and evaluate resources to prepare a research paper
  8. Write effectively for specific audience or purpose

Teaching and Learning Approach

Academic Upgrading courses at Selkirk College build upon students’ life, education, and cultural experiences to develop subject-specific knowledge, awareness, practical skills, and study skills. The learning outcomes listed in this outline form the foundation of the course, and how thoroughly a student meets these outcomes determines their success. Course content integrates problem solving and critical thinking, while developing effective communication skills for the discipline and level.
