ENGL 40 English - Intermediate Level

School of Academic Upgrading and Development

ENGL 40 English – Intermediate Level focuses on development of reading skills in conjunction with critical thinking, writing, speaking, and listening skills. In this course, students practice reading to understand periodicals, reports, technical materials, and/or literature and build effective writing skills through the use of proper sentence skills and writing different paragraph types.

 

Upon completion of ENGL 40, students are prepared to enter either ENGL 50: Advanced level, or ENGL 66: Essential English – Provincial level.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. Interpret, discuss, paraphrase and summarize information using critical and creative thinking
  2. Analyze information, solve problems and support a position using critical and creative thinking
  3. Demonstrate effective listening skills, and respond well to listener feedback
  4. Provide useful input and feedback in a variety of situations
  5. Deliver an effective informative or persuasive oral presentation
  6. Use reading strategies including skimming, scanning and using context clues
  7. Use a variety of reference tools and materials to locate information and expand vocabulary
  8. Develop skills in outlining, memorizing, note-taking and exam-taking
  9. Identify point of view, illogical argument, fallacies, stereotypes, bias and propaganda
  10. Apply the steps of the writing process: prewriting, drafting, revising, and editing
  11. Write effective paragraphs in a range of rhetorical modes including summary
  12. Write an essay
  13. Recognize and avoid plagiarism

Teaching and Learning Approach

Academic Upgrading courses at Selkirk College build upon students’ life, education, and cultural experiences to develop subject-specific knowledge, awareness, practical skills, and study skills.
