DISC 17 Discovery of Self, Others and Community II

School of Academic Upgrading and Development

DISC 17 Discovery of Self, Others and Community II builds upon the skills developed in DISC 15. Students will further examine the importance of self-reflection. Students will learn how to match skills and abilities to employment and career planning, determine areas of support in the workplace, identify strategies for coping with change and stress, and develop personal goals around employment. Topics will also include: personal values, human rights, employment standards, workplace attitudes and styles.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. Complete various inventories/assessment related to education and employment
  2. Develop and participate in personal, education and career planning
  3. Become familiar with the BC Human Rights Code, BC Employment Standards Act and federal Employment Equity Act
  4. Develop awareness of personal and vocational strengths, attributes and challenges
  5. Identify and describe reasonable education/workplace accommodations/adjustments and support
  6. Research job profile and education/training opportunities
  7. Identify and assess personal skills, abilities, work skills, habit, performance and capabilities
  8. Develop personal learning strategies and coping strategies to deal with change
  9. Set learning goals and review and discuss progress
  10. Discover common stressors and strategies for stress management
  11. Recognize different personal and workplace styles and how to apply them in appropriate situations
  12. Understand the relationship between personality, attitudes and actions
  13. Identify personal values and how they apply to job satisfaction

Competency-based Grades

This grading system is based on satisfactory acquisition of defined skills or successful completion of the course learning outcomes. It is used where standard numerical grades are not generally applied, for example in evaluating practicum performance or work placements, in pass/fail courses or for non-credit courses.

Grade Description
AAV ABOVE AVERAGE -The student has mastered all or most course objectives/requirements in a minimum time frame and has exemplified good work and study habits.
COM COMPLETE – denotes that the student has mastered a satisfactory number of course objectives/requirements in a non-credit course
CRG CREDIT GRANTED - denotes that the student performance was satisfactory in a credit course.
NCG NO CREDIT GRANTED - denotes that the student performance was unsatisfactory.
PCG PARTIAL CREDIT GRANTED – denotes that the student has successfully completed a portion of the course objectives in a credit course.
