COOP 301 GIS Co-op Work-term I

School of Environment and Geomatics

COOP 301 is a (paid) work-term which fosters partnerships between students, employers and institution; to bring classroom learning into the workplace. Co-op Education is a process of education that formally integrates students’ academic study with periods of related work experience. By connecting with employers, students will gain valuable hands-on experience in the field of Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

Prerequisites: The student must have completed a minimum of one semester in the School of Environment and Geomatics, GIS Program with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0, completion of all courses. Any student with one (1) or more failing grades must have Advisor approval to enter into a Co-op Work Term.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. apply classroom learning in the workplace.
  2. evaluate personal strengths and weaknesses in the context of Work Integrated Learning.
  3. complete a final project outlining work term learning and experiences.

Teaching and Learning Approach

This is an experiential learning course designed to provide students with firsthand industry experience. Students apply the knowledge, skills, and competencies developed in their academic program within a real-world work environment. This course emphasizes: Learning by doing, through direct participation in a relevant workplace Reflection and integration, as students connect classroom learning to professional practice Independent and self-directed learning, supported by structured modules and guided reflections Instructor and employer feedback, fostering personal and professional growth Students are expected to actively engage in both their workplace responsibilities and course assignments, using reflective practices to deepen their understanding of the work-integrated learning experience.
