BIOL 60 Biology - Provincial Level provides an introduction to cell biology and human physiology. Students will learn about cell biology, mitosis and meiosis, bioenergetics, homeostasis, genetics, respiration, excretion, bones and muscles, nerves and immunity. This course is designed to help students build laboratory and field skills, scientific communication skills and critical thinking skills. Upon completion, students are prepared for post-secondary studies in Biology, Physiology and Health Sciences. This course qualifies for the BC Adult Graduation Diploma.

a) Explain the role of molecules, including water, carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids
b) Describe major structures and functions of cells and their components, including:
i. the basic mechanisms of protein synthesis
ii. the basic mechanisms of membrane transport
iii. the basic mechanisms of DNA replication
c) Describe the role of enzymes and their importance to cellular processes
d) Outline the processes of cellular respiration
e) Describe and compare mitosis and meiosis
- Genetics
a. Describe the principles of inheritance
b. Solve basic genetics problems
c. Describe the role of DNA
- Human Biology
a. Apply the concept of homeostasis
b. Demonstrate knowledge of integration of tissues, organs, and systems
c. Identify structures and describe functions of at least six of the following:

- Laboratory Skills: There will be a minimum of seven dedicated laboratory and /or fieldwork activities, wherein biology learners will:
a. Write a formal lab report
b. Demonstrate familiarity with common lab and field equipment and its use
c. Conduct lab and field procedures safely and ethically
d. Demonstrate microscope skills
e. Collect and record data effectively
f. Analyze and interpret data collected
g. Communicate results and conclusions
