AGRS 20 Planting Gardens - Skill Building I provides students with the opportunity to build garden planters and plant flowers, herbs, and vegetables. The focus will be on gaining the specific skills associated with gardening, safety and tool usage. Students will also learn problem-solving strategies, self-management skills, workplace etiquette for task completion, and awareness of quality workmanship.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. Formulate short- and long-term goals for course completion
  2. Research and determine steps for building a garden planter
  3. Build garden planters
  4. Evaluate skills, abilities, work skills, habits, performance and compatibility

Teaching and Learning Approach

Depending on class size, teaching methodology will include small group projects, individual projects, planting a garden and building a garden planter.

Learning Resources

Recommended: 3-ring binder, dividers, pen and pencils, and any other personal stationery items for personal use (e.g. markers). On gardening days, students must wear closed toe shoes and are encouraged to wear clothes that can get dirty and a hat to block the heat and sun.

Grading Table

Competency-based Grades

This grading system is based on satisfactory acquisition of defined skills or successful completion of the course learning outcomes. It is used where standard numerical grades are not generally applied, for example in evaluating practicum performance or work placements, in pass/fail courses or for non-credit courses.

Grade Description
AAV ABOVE AVERAGE -The student has mastered all or most course objectives/requirements in a minimum time frame and has exemplified good work and study habits.
COM COMPLETE – denotes that the student has mastered a satisfactory number of course objectives/requirements in a non-credit course
CRG CREDIT GRANTED - denotes that the student performance was satisfactory in a credit course.
NCG NO CREDIT GRANTED - denotes that the student performance was unsatisfactory.
PCG PARTIAL CREDIT GRANTED – denotes that the student has successfully completed a portion of the course objectives in a credit course.
