Overview

Program Summary

Selkirk College is endorsed by the BC Industry Training Authority to deliver all four levels of Carpentry Apprenticeship Technical Training to registered carpentry apprentices.
Each level of training consists of a full-time (30 hours per week), seven-week, on-campus program of study. Activities include classroom sessions where as an apprentice you will learn theoretical principles of carpentry, and shop sessions where knowledge is put to use in the mastery of practical skills.

Program Outcomes

Level 1

Upon successful completion of this program, learners will be able to:

• apply safe work practices.
• use construction drawings and specifications.
• interpret building codes and bylaws.
• plan and organize work.
• perform trade mathematics.
• use tools and equipment.
• use levelling instruments and equipment.
• use access, rigging, and hoisting equipment.
• lay out building locations.
• complete concrete formwork activities.
• demonstrate wood frame construction techniques.
• control the forces acting on a building.

Level 2

Upon successful completion of this course, learners will be able to:

• use construction drawings and specifications.
• interpret building codes and bylaws.
• use tools and equipment.
• use site layout equipment.
• lay out building locations.
• complete concrete formwork activities.
• demonstrate wood frame construction techniques.
• install finishing materials.
• control the forces acting on a building.
• control heat and sound transmission.
• control air and moisture movement in buildings.

Level 3

Upon successful completion of this course, learners will be able to:

• use construction drawings and specifications.
• interpret building codes and bylaws.
• use tools and equipment.
• apply excavation and shoring practices.
• complete concrete formwork activities.
• build roof systems.
• install finishing materials.

Level 4

Upon successful completion of this course, learners will be able to:

• interpret building codes and bylaws.
• plan and organize work.
• use site layout equipment.
• prepare building site.
• demonstrate wood frame construction techniques.
• install interior finishes.
• install interior floor, ceiling and wall systems.
• control the forces acting on a building.

Program Admission Requirements

Academic Requirements

The following admission requirements are specific to the Carpentry Foundation program:

• Indentured in Carpentry Apprenticeship
• Active work apprenticeship sponsor
• Successful completion of previous level

Additional Requirements

• Physically fit, (mobility/lifting) good manual dexterity, hand-eye coordination, balance, work at heights & in adverse weather.
• An interview (in person or by telephone) with the School Chair or designate may be required before entry to the program. Interview results are not used as criteria for admission.

Graduation and Promotion

Minimum of 70% required to receive credential.
